Your Free Testosterone level is the most important value in Testosterone Therapy

Normal Testosterone Levels

Normal Total blood serum testosterone levels range from between 300 to 1200. So, if after your lab test, your testosterone level is at 310, your typical general doctor may conclude you are normal and require no hormone treatment. This could be a mistake, because you could have the same debilitating Low T Symptoms at 310 (within the normal range of 300 to 1200) that you would experience at 299 (below the normal T level range), and treatment options should be explored.

Testosterone baseline without symptoms

Your Total Testosterone baseline without symptoms could have been at 1000 for many years, while another patient’s could have been at 800. One man’s deficiency is not the same as another man’s. This is why you need to determine your FREE blood serum Testosterone level, not only your TOTAL blood serum testosterone level.

Free Testosterone is the more telling factor about what is bio-available for your body’s tissues and organs to use. Some men feel perfectly fine at a testosterone baseline of 800 because their Free Testosterone level is relatively high, while others have all the symptoms of Low T at 800 because their Free Testosterone is low – each man’s body chemistry is different.

Hormone Specialist vs. General Physician

It is not uncommon for a general physician or family doctor to deny you hormone treatment based on lab results that reflect that you are within the “normal” range for total testosterone, even though you may be experiencing all the symptoms of a testosterone deficiency as disclosed by the ADAMS Questionnaire. This is why it is important to determine your free testosterone baseline, especially when Low T symptoms are present.

By only focusing on Total Testosterone vs. Free Testosterone, a man can be mistakenly classified as normal in total testosterone and yet be deficient in the type of testosterone that really counts – Free Testosterone!

After the age of 30 you lose about 1-2% of your total testosterone per year. The way to determine if you have low Free Testosterone circulating in your body is with hormone testing, physical exam, low T questionnaire, and the guidance of a physician experienced in male hormone optimization. It is possible to restore low T levels with hormone replacement therapy. The goal of testosterone replacement is to get you back to a more youthful level by replenishing what is missing, thereby reducing or alleviating your low T symptoms.
